The Storm's Special Gift
Barnaby was a small orange cat with the softest fur in the whole neighborhood. But Barnaby had a secret—he was terribly afraid of storms. Every time thunder rumbled, he would hide under the bed, his paws over his ears.
One rainy afternoon, the sky turned dark as midnight. Great flashes of lightning lit up the windows like giant camera flashes. Barnaby scrambled to his favorite hiding spot, but then he heard something strange—a tiny, splashing sound coming from the kitchen.
Curious, Barnaby peeked around the corner. There, in a fishbowl on the counter, swam the most beautiful goldfish he had ever seen. Her scales shimmered like real gold, and she was swimming in excited circles.
"Hello, little cat!" the goldfish said. Barnaby's eyes went wide. Fish weren't supposed to talk!
"You can talk?" Barnaby whispered, stepping closer.
"I'm Ginny," said the goldfish. "And I need your help. That last bolt of lightning gave me a magic wish, but I only have until midnight to use it. I wish to see the world beyond this bowl. Will you help me?"
Barnaby felt scared. A storm was raging outside! But something about Ginny's hopeful eyes made him brave. "What do I need to do?"
"Take me to the garden pond," Ginny said. "The magic works best there."
Barnaby carefully carried the fishbowl outside, rain falling on his whiskers. Lightning flashed overhead, but instead of hiding, he marched on. When they reached the pond, Ginny swam to the surface of her bowl.
"Thank you, Barnaby," she said. "You were brave even though you were scared. That's the best kind of courage."
With a splash, Ginny jumped into the pond. Suddenly, the pond began to glow with golden light. Tiny fish, frogs, and even a dragonfly all shimmered with magic. Ginny had used her wish not just for herself, but to bring magic to the whole pond.
"Come visit me anytime," Ginny called. "And remember—bravery isn't about not being afraid. It's about doing what's right even when you are."
Barnaby trotted home, his fur soggy but his heart full. He still didn't love storms, but he knew now that he could be brave when it mattered most. And every time lightning flashed, he would think of his friend Ginny and smile.
