The Storm's Secret Gift

Barnaby was a small bear with a very big dream. He wanted to be brave like his older brother, but whenever thunder rumbled, Barnaby would hide under his bed.

One rainy afternoon, Barnaby was sitting by the stream when he saw something extraordinary. A tiny goldfish was swimming upstream, going against the current.

"Why do you swim so hard?" Barnaby asked.

"I'm going to the top of the mountain," said the goldfish. "The Great Storm's lightning brings special magic tonight. It's the only night when someone can receive a courage vitamin from the sky."

Barnaby had never heard of such a thing! "A courage vitamin?" he gasped.

"Yes," said the goldfish. "One lightning bolt carries enough magic to make even the most frightened heart brave for a whole year. But you must climb to the summit before midnight."

Barnaby's knees trembled. The mountain was tall and dark. But he thought of all the things he missed — camping trips, storm adventures, and even riding his friend Bruno the bull, who always gently carried the smaller animals but Barnaby had been too scared to try.

"I'll go," Barnaby decided.

The climb was harder than anything Barnaby had ever done. His paws hurt. The wind howled. Just when he wanted to turn back, Bruno appeared beside him.

"I'll carry you partway," the bull said kindly. "Even brave bears need help sometimes."

Together they climbed higher and higher. The sky flashed with lightning, and Barnaby's heart beat fast. But he kept going.

Finally, they reached the summit. A bolt of lightning struck the ground, and when the flash faded, a single glowing vitamin sat on a rock. It shimmered like starlight.

Barnaby ate it, and suddenly he understood something wonderful. The vitamin didn't make him unafraid — it made him brave enough to try anyway, even when he WAS afraid.

Barnaby realized he had already been brave. He had climbed a mountain! He had faced his fears! The goldfish appeared and smiled.

"You didn't need the vitamin, Barnaby. You were brave all along."

Barnaby laughed and rode Bruno down the mountain, ready for every adventure ahead.
