The Storm's Secret Friend

Lily and Ben loved playing by the old creek behind their houses. Today, the sky turned dark and purple, and cracks of lightning flashed like nature's camera snapping pictures of the clouds.

"Let's be spies!" Ben whispered, pulling a pair of toy binoculars from his pocket. "We're on a secret mission to find what lives in that mysterious cave by the water."

Lily giggled. "Spies need code names. I'm Lightning Star!"

"And I'm Thunder Wolf!" Ben declared.

They crept toward the cave as rain began to fall. Suddenly, something green and lumpy emerged from the shadows. It moved slowly, arms stretched out like it was sleepwalking.

"It's a zombie!" Lily gasped, grabbing Ben's hand. But instead of being scary, the creature stopped and smiled. It was covered in green moss and looked like it had been sleeping for a very long time.

"I'm not a zombie," the creature said in a raspy but kind voice. "I'm Milo, the Guardian of the Creek. I've been asleep for one hundred years!"

Milo explained that lightning had woken him up. He had been enchanted to sleep until someone came who truly loved the water and wanted to protect it. He had watched Lily and Ben clean up trash by the creek many times.

"Will you be my friend?" Milo asked sadly. "Everyone else runs away when they see me."

Lily stepped forward. "We're not scared. And we'd love to be your friend!"

Ben nodded. "Spies always make friends with cool allies!"

From that day on, the two children had a magical friend. Milo taught them about all the creatures living in the water, and they taught him about the modern world. And every time lightning flashed across the sky, Lily would whisper, "Remember how we found our best friend during a storm?"
