The Storm's Secret Friend

Lily loved her cat, Muffin, more than anything in the world. But when thunder shook her bedroom window, Muffin bolted out the cat door and disappeared.

"Muffin!" Lily cried, grabbing her yellow raincoat. Outside, lightning flashed across the dark sky like giant sparklers.

She ran to the old garden pond, where Muffin always played. But the pond was empty—just rippling water reflecting the storm.

Then something strange happened. Behind the willow tree, a figure shambled forward. It looked like a person, but its movements were slow and jerky.

Lily gasped. A zombie!

But this wasn't a scary monster like in her big brother's video games. This zombie had kind eyes and was holding something fuzzy in its arms.

"Your cat was stuck," the zombie said in a rumbly voice, like distant thunder. "She climbed the tree and couldn't get down. The lightning scared her."

The zombie held out Muffin, who purred happily.

"But... what ARE you?" Lily asked, taking her cat.

The zombie smiled. "I'm the storm keeper. I sleep for years, but when lightning wakes me, I help lost things find their way home."

Lily noticed the zombie's body was made of swirling clouds and raindrops. That's why he looked strange—he was a storm come to life!

"Thank you!" Lily hugged Muffin tight. "Will I see you again?"

"Whenever lightning cracks across the sky," the storm keeper promised. "Watch for me in the flash."

As the zombie faded into mist, Lily realized that even scary-looking things can be kind. She ran home with Muffin, warm inside her raincoat, while lightning danced above like magic.

And from that night on, every storm became an adventure, not something to fear.
