The Storm's Secret Friend
Maya and Leo loved playing padel at the beach resort. The sun warmed their shoulders as they hit the bouncy yellow ball back and forth, laughing when it sailed over the fence and landed near the ocean.
"Race you to the water!" Leo shouted, dropping his paddle. They ran toward the sparkling waves, ready for swimming. The cool blue water felt wonderful after their game.
But suddenly, the sky turned purple-gray. A crack of lightning split the clouds—BOOM!—and rain began to fall. Other beachgoers scattered toward cover, but something in the water caught Maya's eye.
"Leo, look!"
A strange figure shuffled through the waves. Green seaweed draped over its shoulders. Its skin looked pale and crinkly, like something that had been underwater too long. It moved slowly, arms outstretched.
"It's a zombie!" Leo whispered, eyes wide.
But this zombie wasn't scary. It looked... sad. Confused. The creature stopped at the shoreline and watched them with gentle, ancient eyes.
Another flash of lightning revealed the truth—the 'zombie' was actually a beautiful sea guardian, its pale skin shimmering with underwater magic. It had been caught in a storm while protecting the coral reef and lost its way.
Maya stepped forward. "Are you hurt?"
The guardian nodded slowly. With Leo's help, she guided the creature back into deeper water. As it submerged, it tapped Maya's hand with a webbed finger—a thank you.
"Friend," it bubbled through the waves before disappearing.
Maya and Leo sat on the sand, rain falling softly around them. They realized something important: sometimes things that seem scary at first glance just need a little kindness.
"Next time," Leo said, squeezing Maya's hand, "we won't be afraid to help."
The lightning flashed one last time, and the storm passed. But Maya and Leo knew they had made a friend they'd never forget.
