The Storm's Magic Gift
Lily loved sitting by her window during thunderstorms. Her golden retriever, Barnaby, would rest his head on her lap, and together they'd watch the sky dance.
One rainy afternoon, the sky turned an unusual shade of purple. Lightning flashed across the clouds in brilliant zigzags — not scary like usual, but almost like someone was drawing pictures with light.
"Look, Barnaby!" Lily whispered, pressing her face against the glass.
Suddenly, her iphone began to glow. Not from a message or call, but with a soft, warm light that pulsed like a heartbeat. The screen showed swirling colors that matched the storm outside.
Lily's grandmother had told her stories about magic lightning that could grant small wishes to kind hearts. Lily had always thought they were just stories.
The lightning flashed again, brighter than before, and a small sparkling bolt seemed to drift toward her window. Barnaby sat up and wagged his tail, as if he understood something magical was happening.
When Lily opened the window just a crack, the tiniest spark of lightning floated inside and landed on her phone. The screen swirled with rainbows.
"What should I wish for?" Lily wondered aloud.
Barnaby nudged her hand with his wet nose. Lily laughed. "You're right, buddy. Magic isn't for getting things."
She thought of her little brother, Toby, who refused to eat anything green. No matter how hard their parents tried, Toby would not touch vegetables.
"I wish," Lily said softly, "that good food could be as exciting as magic."
The lightning spark swirled once more and disappeared.
At dinner that night, Lily's mom served something new — bright green emerald pancakes made from spinach and magic. "These were glowing in the refrigerator," she said, confused but amused.
Toby took one bite and his eyes widened. "These taste like adventure!"
Barnaby barked happily from under the table.
Lily smiled, touching her phone. Sometimes the best magic is the kind that helps the people we love. And sometimes, lightning brings more than just light to the sky — it brings little bits of wonder to those who believe.
That night, as Lily drifted to sleep with Barnaby curled at her feet, she knew some storms don't just bring rain. They bring magic, kindness, and the courage to make small wishes that help others. The best wishes, she learned, aren't the ones for yourself — they're the ones that make everyone smile.
