The Storm Pool Secret
Mia loved summer nights. She especially loved when storms rolled across the sky while the air stayed warm and magical. Tonight was such a night. Lightning crackled like silver fireworks, painting the sky in bright flashes.
Mia crept outside to the backyard pool. The water glowed softly in the moonlight, rippling in the warm breeze. But tonight was different — the pool sparkled with tiny lights that matched the dancing lightning above.
"You see it too?" whispered a voice. Mia turned to find her new friend Leo, who'd moved in next door just last week. He'd seemed so shy at school, always reading alone at recess.
"The lights," Mia whispered back, pointing. "They appeared with the lightning."
Leo's eyes widened. "My grandmother told me about this. In the old stories, storm pools collect fallen starlight when lightning strikes nearby. If you swim during the storm's heart, you can see wishes floating in the water."
Mia's heart jumped. "Real wishes?"
"Only if you're brave enough to dive." Leo took her hand. "Together?"
Together they slipped into the glowing water. Each lightning flash made the pool shimmer brighter. And there, just beneath the surface, they saw them — tiny glowing wishes shaped like golden fish, swimming in circles.
One wish-fish swam right up to Mia's face. She heard it whisper: *I wish for a forever friend.*
Leo's wish-fish whispered: *I wish I belonged somewhere.*
Mia grabbed Leo's hand underwater. "You do belong," she said. "You belong here with me."
The wish-fishes spiraled together, creating a brilliant burst of light that shot up toward the lightning clouds. The storm's heart opened, and for one perfect moment, Mia and Leo saw lightning AND starlight dancing together in the sky.
They climbed out, dripping and glowing, wrapped in towels on the pool's edge. The storm drifted away, leaving them with a secret: they'd made magic by being brave together.
"Same time tomorrow?" Leo asked, grinning.
Mia smiled. "Definitely. But maybe we'll wish for something bigger next time."
"Like what?"
"Like friendship magic that lasts forever."
And somewhere in the night sky, the lightning answered with one last perfect flash.
