The Storm Pool Secret

Maya pressed her palm against the cool glass of her bedroom window, watching rain race down like tiny silver rivers. Another summer storm was rolling across the sky. She loved storms — they made the world feel like a magic show.

"Look!" she called to her little brother Toby, who was curled up with his dinosaur books. "The pool is glowing!"

Toby scrambled to the window. Behind their house, the swimming pool shimmered with an unearthly blue light. Rain pocked its surface, creating ripples that sparkled like scattered jewels.

"It's just the lightning reflecting," Toby said wisely, though his eyes were wide.

But Maya shook her head. "No, look closer. The light is coming FROM the water."

A brilliant flash of lightning cracked across the sky. For one heartbeat, the pool's surface rose into the shape of a giant hand — a water hand, cupping something precious before it dissolved back into ripples.

"Did you SEE that?" Maya gasped.

Without thinking, she grabbed Toby's hand and they dashed out into the warm rain, bare feet splashing through puddles. At the pool's edge, they crouched down.

Another flash of lightning. The water swirled and rose again, forming the shape of a small sea turtle made entirely of glowing drops. It opened a tiny water-mouth and spoke in a voice like wind chimes.

"Thank you for coming," the water turtle bubbled. "We are the Storm Pool Spirits. We only appear when lightning dances with rain. We have something for you."

The turtle melted back into the pool, which suddenly became as clear as air. Deep below, on the pool's bottom, lay two beautiful stones — one blue as the ocean, one green as new leaves.

"Hold them together during any storm," the water whispered, "and you'll never be afraid."

Toby and Maya plunged their hands into the warm water, each grasping a stone. Lightning flashed again, and the pool returned to normal.

Now, whenever summer storms darken the sky, Maya and Toby sit by the window, clutching their magic stones. And if they squint, they can still see the pool glow — just a little bit — like a secret smile from the Storm Pool Spirits who taught them that the scariest things can hide the most beautiful surprises.
