The Storm Pool's Secret
Lily hid under her blanket every time thunder rumbled. But tonight, something magical happened.
A crack of lightning flashed outside her window, followed not by the usual boom, but by a soft chime. Curious, Lily peeked out and saw something glowing in her backyard. She tiptoed outside in her rainboots.
There, shimmering in the middle of her yard, was a crystal pool that had never been there before. And sitting beside it was the most unusual creature—a tiny sphinx no bigger than a cat, with golden fur and wise amber eyes.
"Hello, Lily," the sphinx purred. "I've been waiting for someone brave enough to visit during a storm."
"I'm not brave," Lily whispered. "I'm scared of thunder."
The sphinx smiled. "Courage isn't about not being scared. It's about being scared and doing something anyway. Like coming outside tonight."
Lightning flashed again, and this time Lily saw that the pool reflected not just the sky, but beautiful pictures—castles in clouds, dragons dancing on moonbeams, oceans made of starlight.
"The lightning powers the magic pool," the sphinx explained. "Each bolt unlocks a new wonder. Watch."
Another flash, and the pool showed Lily herself—flying on a paper airplane, laughing with friends, standing up to bullies at school. Things she had done or could do.
"You see?" said the sphinx. "Inside you, there's already lightning—spark and courage and power. The storm outside just reminds you of what's inside."
Lily reached out and touched the pool's surface. Warmth filled her, not from the water but from something deeper.
"Thank you," she said, and she wasn't scared anymore.
The sphinx dipped its paw in the water. "Remember, little one: storms may be dark, but they always bring light. And you are both."
As the last thunder rumbled away, the pool and sphinx faded into sparkles. But Lily knew they would return whenever she needed reminding of her own inner lightning.
