The Storm Pool Portal

Emma pressed her nose against the window, watching the summer storm roll in. Her cat Mittens purred nervously on her lap, while dog Barnum danced excitedly around the living room.

"It's just rain, silly," Emma laughed, scratching Barnum's ears. But when a bolt of lightning cracked the sky—BOOM!—something magical happened. Her iPhone on the table began to glow with a soft blue light, brighter than she'd ever seen.

Curious, Emma slid open the door to the backyard. The family pool, usually still and blue, was rippling with that same mysterious glow. Without thinking, she stepped outside, Mittens and Barnum following close behind.

"Look!" Emma gasped. Each time lightning flashed across the dark clouds, the pool transformed. One moment it showed an underwater kingdom of colorful coral. The next, a forest of crystal trees. Then a meadow where flowers sang like tiny bells.

Mittens's tail puffed with wonder. Barnum barked joyfully, sensing adventure. Emma knelt beside the glowing water, her heart racing like thunder.

"I wish... I wish I could see those places," she whispered.

Another lightning bolt streaked across the sky—ZZZT!—and suddenly the pool's surface lifted like a shimmering curtain. Through it, Emma could smell sweet flowers and hear distant, happy laughter.

Barnum bounded forward, then paused, looking back at Emma. He was asking: Are you coming?

Emma grabbed Mittens and took Barnum's paw. Together, they stepped through the glowing portal into a world where pools became doorways, storms brought magic, and best friends meant never facing wonder alone.

They returned before her parents even noticed, the iPhone's glow fading back to normal. But Emma knew the truth now: magic hides in the most ordinary places, especially during storms, especially when you're brave enough to step through.
