The Storm Pool Magic
Lily peered through the rainy window as lightning flashed across the dark sky. She clutched her stuffed bull, Barnaby, to her chest. Tomorrow was her first swimming lesson, and her tummy felt like it was full of butterflies.
"I wish I could be brave like you," she whispered to Barnaby.
Suddenly, another lightning bolt struck—CRACK!—so bright it lit up the whole backyard. When Lily blinked and looked again, something magical was happening. The family pool outside was glowing with a soft blue light!
Lily crept outside in her raincoat. The pool wasn't just glowing—it was sparkling with tiny stars floating in the water. And there, sitting on the pool's edge, was the shaggiest, greenest creature she had ever seen. It looked like a zombie, but not a scary one—more like a friendly, drippy swamp thing.
"Hello there!" the zombie said with a smile that showed just one tooth. "I'm Zog! Care for a swim?"
"I... I can't swim," Lily admitted.
Barnaby seemed to nod his stuffed head. Then, amazingly, he hopped out of her arms and grew life-sized!
"Then I'll help!" Barnaby rumbled gently. His big brown eyes twinkled.
Zog took Lily's hand. His skin felt cool and squishy, like a puddle. "The lightning made the pool magic tonight. Anyone who swims here becomes brave forever."
With Barnaby's strong hooves at her side and Zog's encouraging cheers, Lily stepped into the warm, glowing water. She wasn't scared anymore. The pool felt like floating in a dream.
"Kick your legs like a frog!" Zog called.
"Hold your head up like a proud bull!" Barnaby encouraged.
Lily kicked and splashed and discovered something wonderful—she was swimming!
When morning came, the magic faded. But as Lily arrived at her real swimming lesson, she felt something different. Her butterflies were gone. In her heart, she could still see Zog's one-toothed smile and hear Barnaby's gentle voice.
She dove into the pool with a big splash, swimming better than anyone else. Sometimes, the best magic of all isn't lightning or glowing water. Sometimes it's discovering that courage was inside you all along, waiting for a friend to help you find it.
