The Storm Pool Magic
Emma loved rainy days. Her golden retriever, Barnaby, loved them even more. When the sky turned dark and rumbles shook the windows, Barnaby would dance around the living room, his tail wagging like a metronome gone wild.
One particularly stormy afternoon, lightning flashed so bright it turned the whole backyard purple. BOOM! Thunder shook the house. But Emma noticed something strange—Barnaby was barking at something behind the old oak tree.
She grabbed her yellow raincoat and followed him out. There, where only mud usually lived, something magical shimmered. It was a pool, but not like any pool Emma had ever seen. The water glowed with a soft blue light, and tiny stars swam beneath the surface like silver fish.
Barnaby bounded toward it, but Emma grabbed his collar. "Wait! We don't know what it is!"
Then the pool spoke. Not with words, but with feelings—curiosity, welcome, and a little bit of mischief. Emma's fear turned to wonder. She dipped one toe in the water. Warm! Not cold like rainwater, but cozy like a blanket fresh from the dryer.
Another flash of lightning illuminated the whole yard. In that moment, Emma understood. This pool only appeared during storms. It was magic born from weather's wildest moments.
She looked at Barnaby, whose eyes said what he was thinking: *Can we please?*
Emma smiled and let go of his collar. Together, dog and girl stepped into the glowing water. They didn't sink—they floated! The pool lifted them gently upward, higher and higher, until they were bouncing through the storm clouds like balloons on strings.
Raindrops tasted like lemon drops up here. Lightning became ribbons of rainbow light they could catch and weave into crowns. Thunder sounded like friendly giants laughing.
They played until the storm passed, then the pool lowered them softly back to the ground just as the sun peeked through the clouds. The magical water faded away, leaving only a single rainbow stretching across the sky.
"Nobody will believe us," Emma said, hugging Barnaby as they trudged back inside.
Barnaby licked her cheek. *That's okay,* his eyes seemed to say. *Some magic is just for us.*
And every storm after that, Emma and Barnaby watched the sky together, waiting for the lightning that would bring their secret pool back again.
