The Storm Papaya
Lila loved thunderstorms. While other kids hid under blankets, she pressed her nose against the window glass, watching the sky dance.
One rainy afternoon, her grandfather handed her a glowing orange fruit. "This is a magic papaya," he whispered. "It only grows during the very best lightning storms."
Lila's eyes went wide. "Really?"
"Really. But you must share it with someone who needs a friend."
Outside, rain pounded on the roof like a thousand tiny drummers. A flash of lightning turned the whole backyard bright white. BOOM!
Lila grabbed the papaya and her baseball glove. She knew exactly who needed a friend.
Timmy from next door sat on his porch, looking sad as rain dripped from the roof. He'd struck out at his game yesterday, and some kids had laughed.
"Timmy!" Lila called. "Come here!"
She showed him the papaya, which seemed to shimmer in the gray light. They sat on her covered porch as lightning crackled across the sky.
"My grandpa says this fruit has a special vitamin," Lila explained. "It's called friendship vitamin. It makes you brave."
Timmy smiled a little. "I could use some brave."
They split the papaya with a baseball bat they'd found in the garage. The fruit was sweet and bright, like sunshine caught in orange skin. As they ate, something magical happened.
Each time lightning flashed, the papaya seeds glowed brighter and brighter. The puddles on the lawn reflected the light like little mirrors.
"Let's play catch!" Timmy said, grabbing his baseball glove.
"In the rain?" Lila laughed.
"Why not?"
They threw the baseball back and forth as water splashed around their ankles. Every time the ball flew through the air, it left a trail of sparkles, like tiny lightning bolts following its path.
They played until the storm passed and a rainbow stretched across the sky.
"I think I struck out because I was scared," Timmy admitted. "But I'm not scared anymore."
Lila grinned. "That's the friendship vitamin working."
That night, Lila pressed her nose against the window again. A new storm was coming. She couldn't wait to see what other magic was hiding in the rain.
Sometimes the best adventures don't happen in sunshine. Sometimes, they happen right in the middle of a storm, with a papaya, a baseball, and a brand new friend.
