The Storm-Keeper's Secret
Lila loved the sound of rain tapping on her window, but tonight the storm felt different. The sky flashed purple and white, and she could hear something rumbling beyond the thunder. Curious, she tiptoed downstairs in her rainbow pajamas and opened the back door just a crack.
There, standing near the old oak tree, was the biggest bear Lila had ever seen. His fur shimmered like silver threads in the darkness. But instead of running away, the bear was looking up at the sky, catching giant glowing drops in his paws.
"You're doing it wrong," the bear said in a voice that sounded like water rushing over smooth stones. Lila almost fell over. A talking bear!
"What are you doing?" she whispered, forgetting to be scared.
"Collecting lightning in drops of water," the bear explained, holding up a paw that sparkled with tiny trapped stars. "Each storm, the Storm-Keeper falls asleep and forgets to catch the lightning before it hits the ground. That's why we get thunder crashes and scary flashes. I'm trying to help."
Lila's eyes grew wide. "Can I help?"
The bear smiled, and his eyes twinkled like moonlight on a lake. Together, they danced through the storm, catching glowing drops in buckets and jars. Lila felt like she was holding pieces of magic in her hands. The water hummed and buzzed with trapped energy, warm against her palms.
When the sky finally cleared, the bear poured all the lightning-water into a hollow in the oak tree. "The Storm-Keeper will use this for tomorrow's rainbows," he said.
Before leaving, he touched Lila's forehead with his wet paw. "Thank you, little friend. The bravest helpers come in the smallest packages."
Lila woke up in her bed the next morning, wondering if it had been a dream. But when she looked in the mirror, there above her forehead was a tiny lightning bolt that sparkled like silver water.
Sometimes the scariest storms hold the most beautiful magic — and sometimes the best friends are the ones you least expect.
