The Storm Inside

The lightning flashed across the hotel window, illuminating Richard's tired reflection. At 47, he'd spent two decades climbing corporate ladders, collecting titles like some men collected baseball cards. Senior Vice President. Regional Director. All of it reducing to a single embroidered hat hanging on the bathroom door—corporate swag from a company retreat he'd attended alone.

He'd meant to call Julia. Three years of marriage, eight months of separation, and somehow he never found the right moment. The pool deck outside his window was empty, rain carving thousand tiny craters into the water's surface. He remembered their honeymoon in Santorini, how she'd laughed sliding into the hotel pool at midnight, her dress billowing around her like dark flowers. How he'd stayed fully dressed on the edge, checking emails on his phone, terrified of missing something that couldn't wait until morning.

Another lightning strike, closer this time. The hotel's emergency generator kicked on with a groan.

"You're always waiting for the next thing," she'd told him during their last conversation, her voice exhausted rather than angry. "You think life is something that happens after you finish preparing for it."

He'd defended himself, of course. Spoken about responsibility, about building something for their future. But standing there now, watching the storm tear at the palm trees, he understood what she'd meant. He'd been pool-side his entire life—close enough to see the beauty, never willing to dive in and risk getting wet.

The phone on his nightstand began to vibrate. An unknown number with a Seattle area code. Julia's sister. Richard let it ring.

Instead, he walked to the window, placed his palm against the cold glass. Lightning cracked the sky open, and in that instant of white brilliance, Richard made his choice. Not the safe one. Not the calculated one. The terrifying one.

He grabbed the room key, left his phone on the bed, and stepped out into the storm.
