The Storm Garden's Secret Friend

Maya loved storms. When lightning flashed across the sky, she imagined it was nature's camera taking pictures of secret moments. One rainy afternoon, while playing padel in the covered court with her dad, Maya noticed something strange. A small figure shuffled through the rain, dripping wet, heading toward her grandmother's papaya tree.

The figure moved slowly, arms stretched forward, like something from a spooky movie. A zombie! But as Maya got closer, she saw it was just her new neighbor, Leo, wearing his big brother's zombie costume from Halloween.

"I'm protecting the papayas!" Leo called. "My mom says they're almost ripe, and I can't let the storm knock them down."

Maya grabbed her racquet. "I'll help!"

Together, they created a shelter using the padel net, propping it up with old brooms. Rain drummed overhead, and lightning illuminated their determined faces. They spent the whole afternoon guarding the tree, telling stories between thunder claps.

"My grandmother says papayas taste like sunshine," Maya shared.

"I've never tried one," Leo admitted.

"Then when they're ready, we'll share them together."

The storm passed, leaving a golden sunset. Not a single papaya had fallen. Grandma came out, saw their muddy faces and the clever shelter, and smiled. "Friends who protect fruit together, eat fruit together."

The next morning, three papayas were ready. Maya and Leo sat on the porch, sticky juice dripping down their chins, laughing about how they had fought off a zombie storm. And every time lightning flashed after that, Maya knew it wasn't just taking pictures—it was reminding her of the day she found a friend in the rain.
