The Storm Friend

lightningwaterzombie

Maya loved storms more than anything. Whenever dark clouds gathered, she would press her nose against the window, waiting for the sky to dance.

One rainy afternoon, the weather turned strange. First came the thunder—rumble, rumble, CRACK! Then a bolt of lightning flashed across the sky like a giant broken zipper. Maya ran outside in her yellow boots, splashing through puddles.

That's when she saw it. A lumpy, green figure shuffling near the old pond. A zombie!

Maya wanted to run, but something stopped her. This zombie didn't look scary at all. It looked sad.

"Hello?" she called out.

The zombie turned slowly. Its eyes were kind, not mean. It let out a soft groan that sounded like... singing?

"I'm Benny," the zombie said. "I live in the water."

Maya's eyes went wide. "You live in the pond?"

"Beneath it," Benny nodded. "In a magical cave. I only come up during lightning storms. The lightning gives me energy to walk on land."

Benny explained that he was the last of his kind—a water spirit who guarded the pond's secrets. Most people ran away when they saw him. They called him names and said he was scary.

"But you're not scary," Maya said. "You're lonely."

Benny's green face lit up. "Will you be my friend?"

"Yes!" Maya grinned.

Every storm after that, Maya and Benny would meet. They would splash in puddles, count lightning flashes, and Benny would teach her secret water songs. The other kids in town still whispered about the mysterious zombie in the storm. But Maya knew the truth.

Sometimes, the scariest-looking things are just the loneliest. And sometimes, all it takes is one friend to turn a monster into magic.

The lightning no longer frightened Maya. It just meant her friend was coming to play.
