The Storm Fox's Gift
Deep in the Whispering Woods lived a small red fox named Ember. Unlike other foxes who slept during storms, Ember loved wild weather. One rainy afternoon, she sat by her favorite pond watching the ripples dance across the water.
Suddenly, a bolt of lightning flashed, and something tumbled from the sky! It landed with a splash right in the middle of the pond. Ember's golden eyes widened. A tiny glowing creature sputtered and coughed in the water.
"Help!" squeaked the little being, which looked like a spark from a fire that had grown arms and legs.
Ember didn't hesitate. She grabbed a long branch and held it out. The lightning creature grabbed on, and Ember pulled her to safety. The creature shook herself dry, and sparks flew in all directions.
"Thank you!" she said, her voice sounding like crackling flames. "I'm Spark. I fell during the big storm up above."
Ember shared her warm den with Spark, bringing her berries and showing her the forest. Spark was amazed by everything — the trees, the flowers, and especially the peaceful pond.
"Why would you want to go back up there?" Ember asked. "It's so nice here."
Spark looked at the sky. "My family makes the light shows. Without me, the storms are just dark and scary. I make them beautiful so children aren't afraid."
Ember realized that even scary things could have a purpose. She led Spark to the highest hill, where the wind was strongest.
"You need to get high," Ember said. "Climb on my back."
The fox carried her friend to the very top of an ancient oak tree. Spark hugged Ember. "You saved me, and now you're helping me go home. Foxes aren't supposed to be this kind to lightning creatures."
"That's what friends do," Ember said simply.
Spark leaped into the clouds, and suddenly the whole sky lit up with rainbow-colored lightning. It was the most beautiful storm anyone had ever seen.
Every storm after that, Ember would watch for her friend's special rainbow lightning. And when children pointed at the sky in wonder instead of fear, the little fox smiled, knowing that courage and kindness could turn something scary into something magical.
