The Storm Cat's Secret

Lily had always wanted a cat, but her allergies made it impossible. That's why she was so surprised when a tiny orange kitten appeared on her windowsill during a storm.

"Hello, little friend," she whispered, opening the window just a crack. Rain splattered against the glass, and lightning flashed across the dark sky. The kitten didn't seem afraid at all. In fact, its fur was sparkling with tiny electric glimmers.

The cat leaped inside and shook itself dry. But instead of water, little droplets of light fell from its whiskers. Each one made a soft *ting* sound when it hit the floor.

"I'm Spark," the cat said, surprising Lily. "I'm a storm cat. I live in the clouds during thunderstorms, but tonight something went wrong. My storm family is swimming in the rain clouds, but I fell out!"

Lily's eyes widened. "You mean... you come from lightning?"

"Sort of," Spark purred, his fur now glowing softly like a night-light. "Storm cats help create the lightning you see. We dash through the clouds, leaving trails of light behind us. But I'm too small to make real lightning yet. I can only make little sparkles."

Outside, thunder rumbled. Spark's ears twitched nervously. "I need to get back before the storm ends, or I'll be stuck here forever. But I don't know how to fly back up!"

Lily thought hard. She grabbed her favorite yellow umbrella—a big one shaped like a sunflower. "Maybe this could help!"

She carried Spark up to the hill behind her house, where the wind was strongest. Holding the umbrella open, she told the cat, "Jump on and hold tight!"

Spark scrambled onto the umbrella. As a strong gust of wind caught it, they began to lift! Higher and higher they flew, right into the storm clouds.

Suddenly, they were surrounded by other storm cats—some big as lions, others small as mice—all swimming through the rainy sky like fish in an ocean. They were leaving trails of magnificent lightning behind them.

"Spark!" called a larger cat. "You're back!"

Spark jumped from the umbrella and joined his family. Before he swam away into the clouds, he looked back at Lily. "Thank you, friend!" he called. "Come look for me during storms. I'll make the lightning dance just for you!"

From that day on, whenever storms came, Lily watched the lightning differently. She knew her friend Spark was up there, swimming through the clouds, making the sky bright with magic. And sometimes, if she looked very closely, she could see a tiny orange spark dancing among the bigger bolts of lightning—a little storm cat saying hello to the girl who helped him find his way home.
