The Storm Bull's Secret Gift

Maya loved storms more than anything. While other children hid inside when dark clouds gathered, she pressed her nose against the window, waiting for the first flash of lightning to streak across the sky.

One rainy afternoon, Maya was sitting under her favorite palm tree in the backyard when something strange happened. A bolt of lightning struck so close she could smell the ozone. When she opened her eyes, a magnificent creature stood before her—a bull made entirely of swirling storm clouds, with eyes that glowed like stars.

"Please don't run away!" the bull said in a voice that rumbled like distant thunder. "I've been searching for someone brave enough to see me."

Maya's eyes widened. "You can talk?"

"Only to those who truly listen," the bull replied, lowering his enormous head. He extended one front hoof, and Maya noticed something peculiar—his hoof had a marking shaped like a tiny palm print. "I am Zephyr, guardian of storms. For five hundred years, I've carried the gift of courage, but I've forgotten how to share it."

"That's so sad," Maya said, reaching out to touch the palm marking on Zephyr's hoof. As her finger made contact, golden light burst between them. Suddenly, she understood—Zephyr wasn't made of storms at all. He was made of all the brave moments that happened during storms: firefighters rescuing families, farmers protecting their animals, children like Maya who found beauty in the dark.

"The palm print means connection," Zephyr explained, his voice growing warmer. "When you're scared, press your palm to your heart and remember: every storm eventually passes, but courage lasts forever."

Maya practiced this secret whenever she felt afraid. Before her big piano recital, she pressed her palm to her heart and imagined lightning bolts of bravery. When she saw a new student crying in the cafeteria, she sat beside her and pressed her palm to the girl's hand, sharing Zephyr's gift.

Years later, Maya's own daughter pressed her small palm against the window during a thunderstorm. "I'm scared, Mama."

Maya smiled, placing her hand over her daughter's heart. "Do you know what lightning really is?" she whispered. "It's the sky painting courage across the darkness. And somewhere, in every storm, there's a magical bull running through the clouds, reminding us to be brave."

Outside, a gentle rumble of thunder rolled across the sky, and somewhere deep within the storm, a pair of starry eyes blinked happily, knowing his gift had found its way into another brave heart.
