The Storm Bull's Secret

Oliver had always been afraid of storms. The thunder shook his windowpane, and the lightning cracked the sky open like a broken egg.

"Don't worry," said his best friend Mei, who sat beside him on the bed. "It's just nature dancing." Oliver wasn't so sure.

That night, when the worst storm of the summer raged outside, Oliver heard something strange. Creaking. Groaning. From the barn.

He crept downstairs in his pajamas, raincoat buttoned tight. The barn door swung in the wind. Inside, old Barnaby—the grumpy bull who usually slept through everything—was standing in the center of his stall, glowing softly.

"You're finally here," Barnaby said.

Oliver's jaw dropped. "You can talk?"

"Only during storms," said the bull, his deep voice rumbly like distant thunder. "When the lightning comes close, the magic wakes up." His eyes twinkled. "Want to see something?"

Barnaby nudged Oliver toward the open barn door. Outside, the rain fell in sheets—but it wasn't falling down anymore. It was falling UP, toward the sky, where it pooled into great shimmering lakes above the clouds.

"We go swimming," Barnaby said simply, and leaped.

Oliver gasped as the bull soared into the sky, landing with a gentle splash in a cloud-pool. The bull's heavy hooves made ripples across the surface. He looked back at Oliver and nodded.

Oliver jumped too.

Suddenly he was swimming through warm starry water, lightning flashing all around like beautiful glowing fish. The bolts weren't scary anymore—they were playful, darting through the cloud-pools like curious eels. One lightning bolt zipped right up to Oliver's nose and wiggled hello.

"They're just lonely," Barnaby said, paddling beside him. "Lightning wants to make friends, but everyone runs away."

Oliver reached out and touched the lightning bolt. It tingled, like when your foot falls asleep, but warm and happy. The bolt curled around his finger like a glowing pet.

"See?" said Barnaby. "Things aren't always what they seem. The scariest parts of life might just be waiting for someone to say hello."

They swam among the stars until the storm passed, then floated gently back to earth. Barnaby licked Oliver's cheek with a sandpaper tongue.

"Our secret," the bull whispered, and settled back into his straw like a normal, sleeping cow.

Back in his room, Oliver watched the next storm from his window, but he wasn't afraid anymore. He knew the lightning was just dancing, waiting for a friend, and somewhere in the barn, a magical bull was smiling in his dreams.
