The Storm Between Us

Emma stood at the kitchen counter, forcing herself to chew the cold spinach salad she'd prepared with such optimism three hours ago. Another dinner alone. Another fight avoided through strategic silence.

Outside, lightning cracked the sky open, illuminating the empty chair across from her. She should have been used to this—Marcus had been working late for months now—but tonight the silence felt heavier, like water rising slowly around her ankles.

She went to the window. Rain streaked the glass, distorting the streetlights into bleeding watercolors. This was supposed to be their fifth anniversary. They'd planned a weekend getaway, booked the cabin, paid the deposit. Then came the email about the merger. Then the late nights. Then the text messages he thought she didn't know about.

A cat darted across the wet pavement below—a stray she'd been feeding for weeks, the one Marcus had insisted they couldn't keep because "we're never home anyway."

Emma pressed her forehead against the cold glass. She was thirty-four, with graying hair she stopped dyeing six months ago when Marcus stopped noticing anything about her except whether she'd remembered to schedule his dental cleanings. The irony wasn't lost on her: she was becoming invisible in her own marriage.

Her phone buzzed. Marcus: "Running even later. Don't wait up."

The lightning flashed again, and this time she saw it clearly—the reflection in the window wasn't just a tired woman in an oversized sweater. It was someone she used to know, someone who laughed with her whole body, who cooked elaborate meals just because, who believed that love could weather anything.

Emma turned from the window, dumped the spinach into the trash, and went to the closet where she'd hidden the cabin reservation confirmation. She wasn't waiting up. She wasn't waiting at all.

The storm outside was nothing compared to the one she was about to start.
