The Storm Between Us

The thunder rattled the hotel window, and Mara checked her iPhone again. Still no reply from David. Three hours since she'd told him she was leaving, and the only notification was the weather alert flashing across her screen: lightning approaching in fifteen minutes.

She stood at the window, looking down at the pool below. It was empty—the storm chasing everyone indoors. The water reflected the darkening sky, a mirror of how she felt. After seven years of marriage, she couldn't tell if she was drowning or just finally learning to swim.

The room felt too quiet without his things. His laptop charger was still coiled on the nightstand like a snake, a thick black cable she'd tripped over a thousand times. She'd always meant to ask him to put it away. Just one more thing she'd never said.

Her phone buzzed. Not David. Her boss, wanting to know if she'd be on the 8 AM call. Always the demands, always someone needing something from her. She silenced it without replying.

Outside, the first flash of lightning split the sky, illuminating everything for a heartbeat. The pool, the empty lounge chairs, the palm trees bending in the wind. In that moment of clarity, she realized she wasn't waiting for him to come save her. She was waiting for permission to leave that she didn't need.

She picked up the phone. Her thumb hovered over his number, then moved to the airline app. One seat, first available flight. She'd been so focused on the storm she'd forgotten she could simply walk out of the rain.

The lightning flashed again, closer this time. She packed her bag, left the cable on the nightstand where it lay, and headed for the door. Some things you carry with you. Some things you leave behind.
