The Storm Before Silence

The lightning illuminated everything she'd been pretending not to see. Elena's hands trembled as she filled the glass with water, her reflection on the countertop catching the flash through the kitchen window. Six years of marriage, and she'd never noticed how Marcus looked at her sister before tonight.

Outside, thunder rattled the windowpanes. Their dog, Buster—a rescue shepherd mix with anxiety that mirrored her own—pressed his wet body against her legs, sensing something she'd refused to acknowledge for months. The front door opened. Marcus stepped inside, hair plastered to his forehead from the rain, smelling of whiskey and someone else's perfume.

"You're back," she said, voice flat.

"Elena, I can explain—"

"Don't." She set the water glass down with deliberate calm. "I saw you two at the bar. I watched you laugh like you haven't laughed with me in years."

"It's not what you think—"

"Isn't it?" She met his eyes, her own dry. "Buster knew. He's known for weeks. Maybe that's why he stopped sleeping in our bed."

The dog whined softly at her feet. Another flash of lightning, and for a split second, everything was blindingly clear: the way he'd been working late, the sudden interest in his appearance, the emotional distance that had grown like kudzu between them.

"I'm sorry," Marcus whispered, but the words felt hollow, like something he'd practiced.

Elena looked at her hands, at the glass of water she'd poured for a man who no longer existed for her. "Me too," she said. "For staying so long in a room where I was the only one actually present."

She walked past him, Buster at her heels, and grabbed her keys. The storm outside finally felt honest.
