The Storm Bear's Gift
Lily loved the old swimming pool in her backyard, especially on hot summer days. But tonight, the water sparkled strangely as lightning flashed across the dark sky.
Something splashed in the deep end. Lily peeked over the edge, expecting to see a frog. Instead, a wet brown bear looked up at her!
'Hello there,' said the bear, shaking water from his fur. 'I'm Bruno. Don't worry—I'm a storm bear. I only visit during lightning storms.'
Lily's eyes widened. 'Storm bears exist?'
Bruno climbed out and sat beside her. 'We carry lightning in our fur. See?' Tiny blue sparks danced across his shoulders like fireflies. 'I come here every summer to cool off. The pool water helps calm my storms.'
He dipped a paw in the water, and ripples of gold spread outward. 'Want to see something magical?'
Lily nodded. Bruno touched her forehead with a wet paw, and suddenly she felt light as air. Together they dove into the pool, but instead of getting wet, they floated through stars and galaxies. Lightning became swirling ribbons of light. The pool had become a portal to a magical world.
'This is where storm bears live,' Bruno whispered, showing her caves made of crystal and rainbows. 'We collect storm memories to share with lonely children.'
Lily thought of her friend Sam, who was afraid of thunder. 'Sam needs a storm memory too.'
Bruno smiled. 'A true friend thinks of others.' He pressed a glowing lightning bolt into her palm. 'Give this to Sam. It will help her find courage.'
The next morning, Lily found herself beside the regular old pool. But in her pocket sparkled a tiny stone that hummed with energy. That afternoon, when thunder rattled the windows, she gave it to Sam.
Sam held the stone, and her fear melted away. 'It's like having a brave friend right here,' she said.
Lily smiled, thinking of Bruno. Sometimes the best friends come when you least expect them—and magic can be found in the most surprising places, even a swimming pool during a lightning storm.
