The Static Between Us

The cable kept fizzing in and out, like it couldn't decide whether to exist or not. I watched Jax sprawl across my beanbag chair, one leg hooked over the arm, clicking through channels like his life depended on finding something—anything—that wasn't infomercials or soap operas.

"Dude, can we just watch the baseball game?" I asked, already knowing the answer.

Jax ignored me, as usual. He'd been my friend since kindergarten, which meant he'd been ignoring me since kindergarten. But today something felt different. He stopped clicking on a fuzzy channel where a baseball game was just visible through waves of static and snow.

"Your palm," he said suddenly, grabbing my hand before I could pull away. "Let me see it."

"What? No."

"I've been reading about this online. Palmistry. It's actually scientific. There was this whole Reddit thread about it."

I sighed but let him examine my hand. His fingers traced the lines on my palm with weird intensity, like he was actually looking for something.

"You're going to meet someone," he announced. "Soon. Like, really soon."

"Okay, psychic Jax. Cool."

"I'm serious. It's right here—" he pointed at a line that looked exactly like every other line on my hand "—this means new connection. Important connection."

The baseball game flickered behind him, players appearing and disappearing like ghosts. I watched Jax's face, really looked at him for the first time in months. When had his jaw gotten so sharp? When had he started looking at me like that?

"What if the connection's already here?" I whispered.

The cable cut out completely, leaving us in sudden silence. Jax didn't let go of my hand. Through the window, I could hear real baseball players practicing at the park down the street—the crack of bats, the distant calls. Real. Not mediated through screens and static.

"Maybe," Jax said, his thumb still moving across my palm, "maybe we don't need the cable to tell us what's real."

And there it was—the moment everything shifted. The static between us finally cleared.
