The Starry Night Bull
Lily loved brushing her grandmother's long silver hair every evening. The old woman told the best stories while Lily's fingers worked through the silky strands, untangling the day's knots.
"Tonight," Grandmother whispered, eyes twinkling like the stars outside their window, "I'll tell you about the night the stars came down to visit."
Lilly's loyal dog, Barnaby, thumped his tail against the wooden floorboards. He always settled in for story time, his golden head resting on Lily's feet.
"Long ago," Grandmother began, "when I was just your age, something magical happened. I was running through the meadow at midnight, chasing fireflies. The moon was so bright it turned everything to silver—the grass, the flowers, even my hair glowed like moonlight!"
Barnaby lifted his head, as if he could see the meadow too.
"Suddenly," Grandmother continued, "the ground began to rumble. Not scary rumbling—magical rumbling. And from the sky, a great bull made entirely of stars climbed down from the heavens! His horns were made of shooting stars. His eyes held entire galaxies. He was the most beautiful creature anyone had ever seen."
Lily stopped brushing, entranced. "A star bull? What did he want?"
"He was lonely," Grandmother said softly. "The stars are beautiful, but they're far apart. The star bull had seen how people on Earth hugged and laughed together, and he wanted to know what friendship felt like. So I did something brave—I reached out and touched his nose. It was warm like sunshine, not cold like you'd think a star would be. And in that moment, I understood that being brave means opening your heart to something new, even when it seems scary."
Barnaby sighed happily and closed his eyes.
"Every night now," Grandmother patted Lily's hand, "when I look at the constellation Taurus in the sky, I know my friend is watching over me. And that's the secret, Lily—magic is real when you believe in kindness and courage. The star bull taught me that the bravest thing you can do is make friends with someone different from you."
That night, Lily dreamed of starlight and friendship. When she woke, Barnaby was waiting by the door, ready for adventure. And somehow, the morning sun made her hair shine just a little bit brighter—like she, too, carried a piece of the stars.
