The Starry Bull of Moonlight Pool
Lily loved the old palm tree in her backyard. Its rough bark felt like elephant skin, and its long fronds danced in the breeze like green fingers waving hello. But nobody else seemed to notice the magic hidden beneath its leaves.
One summer evening, when the moon painted everything silver, Lily discovered something wonderful. Behind the palm tree, where the shadows were deepest, there was a pool she'd never seen before. It shimmered like liquid starlight, and when she leaned closer, tiny bubbles rose to the surface, popping with soft chimes like tiny bells.
A snout broke through the water's surface, followed by two curved horns that glowed like captured moonbeams. A bull climbed out—but not like the scary ones in picture books. This bull was no bigger than a kitten, with fur the color of midnight sky and speckled with stardust that twinkled when he moved.
"Hello, small friend," the bull said, his voice warm as cocoa. "I'm Orion. I've been waiting for someone with enough wonder to see me."
Lily's eyes grew wide. "You can talk?"
"Only to those who believe in magic," Orion replied, shaking droplets from his horns that turned into butterflies before flying away. "This pool appears only when someone needs a friend. Would you like to see where I live?"
He nodded toward the pool's reflection. Instead of showing Lily's face, the water displayed a meadow made of clouds, with rivers of starlight and trees that grew jellybeans.
"Hold my horn," Orion said gently.
Lily reached out, and suddenly they were sliding through the water like it was a slide, landing softly in the cloud meadow. They played until the stars began to fade, racing comets and catching wishes in jars made of crystal.
"You must go now," Orion whispered as dawn approached. "But whenever you need magic, just visit the pool. Real magic isn't about tricks—it's about friendship and believing in the impossible."
Back in her yard, the pool vanished. But the palm tree's leaves now twinkled with starlight, and in Lily's pocket, she found a single stardust flake that still glows whenever she needs a reminder that magic is real for those who believe.
