The Starlight Secret

Max wrinkled his nose at the orange tablet on his spoon. "I don't want this vitamin," he grumbled. "It tastes like dusty oranges."

His mom sighed. "Max, please. It helps you grow strong."

Max swallowed it with a gulp of water, then ran to his room. His pet goldfish, Goldie, swam in circles in her bowl on the dresser. Max pressed his nose against the glass. "You're lucky, Goldie. Nobody makes you eat vitamins."

Goldie swished her tail and blew bubbles. Max could have sworn she looked guilty.

That night, moonlight spilled through Max's window. He woke to a strange sound — *splash, splash, splash* — coming from the backyard. His heart pounded as he crept outside in his pajamas.

The family's pool was glowing. Not just reflecting moonlight, but actually glowing from beneath the water's surface. Max leaned over the edge and gasped.

Goldie was swimming in the pool! But she wasn't small anymore. She was the size of a dinner plate, and her scales shimmered like tiny stars. Around her floated hundreds of orange tablets — vitamins! — but they weren't dull and dusty anymore. They sparkled with inner light, like captured starlight.

"Goldie?" Max whispered.

The fish turned. Her eyes twinkled like actual stars. "Max! You found us!" Her voice sounded like wind chimes.

"You can talk?"

"Only in the Moonlight Pool," Goldie said. "And only for a few minutes. Look!" She swished her tail, and the vitamins began to dance on the water's surface. "We don't just make you strong, Max. They're pieces of fallen stars. We fish collect them to keep the water magic for children who need wonder."

Max watched in amazement as the vitamins swirled together, forming constellations on the water — dragons, castles, sailing ships.

"You ate my vitamins!" Max said, but he was smiling.

"I was keeping them safe until you could see their magic," Goldie explained. "Now you know the secret. Strong bodies are good, but a strong imagination is better."

The glow began to fade. Goldie shrank back to normal size and swam toward the pool's edge. Max gently scooped her up.

Back in her bowl, Goldie was just a regular goldfish again. But as Max placed her on the dresser, she winked at him.

The next morning, Max swallowed his vitamin without complaint. His mom looked surprised. "What changed?" she asked.

Max smiled, thinking of starlight and magic fish. "Just realized something important, Mom. Vitamins aren't just about growing strong. They're about growing magical."

From then on, every vitamin was a tiny star, and Max knew that somewhere, in the moonlight, a goldfish was guarding the wonder.
