The Starlight Pool
Luna discovered the secret on a Tuesday evening, while fireflies danced in her backyard. Behind the old oak tree, hidden by ferns, there glimmered a pool of liquid starlight. The water didn't splash or ripple like normal water—it shimmered with the colors of twilight.
'Are you going to stand there all night?' a deep voice rumbled.
Luna jumped. From the bushes emerged a bear, but not like the ones in books. This bear's fur was midnight blue with constellations twinkling along his spine. His eyes held the warmth of summer campfires.
'I'm Barnaby,' the bear said, sitting on his haunches. 'And you've found the Starlight Pool. It only appears to children who believe in magic.'
Barnaby explained that the pool granted wishes, but only wishes that helped others. Luna thought of her friend Theo, who had broken his leg and couldn't play soccer all summer. She wished for something that would make him smile.
The water bubbled and rose, forming a floating soccer ball made entirely of light. 'It plays gentle games,' Barnaby said. 'Theo can practice from his window.'
But then the pool began to fade. 'One wish per moon,' Barnaby said sadly. 'And the magic is leaving.'
'Why?'
'Because fewer children believe. The old stories are forgotten.' His constellation fur dimmed. 'Soon, the pool will vanish forever.'
Luna grabbed his paw. 'Then we'll make new stories. Starting with ours.' She closed her eyes and made a second wish—not for herself, but for everyone who needed magic. 'I wish the pool would never need believing to shine.'
The water exploded into a fountain of silver light, showering them with stardust. When it settled, the pool still glowed—but now it was solid and permanent, like a mirror to the stars.
Barnaby's fur blazed brighter than ever. 'You saved us,' he whispered.
Luna returned every night, bringing friends who needed wonder. And sometimes, on summer evenings, if you look closely at certain backyard pools, you might see starlight dancing on the water. That's Luna's magic, still granting wishes to children who remember to look.
