The Starlight Pool

bearpoolfriend

Lily couldn't sleep. The full moon shone through her window, casting silver shadows across her room. She crept downstairs and stepped into her backyard.

What she saw made her gasp.

The swimming pool wasn't filled with water anymore. It was filled with liquid starlight—sparkling, glowing, swirling with tiny galaxies. And in the middle of this magical pool sat a great brown bear, paddling happily.

The bear noticed Lily and waved a paw.

"Hello there!" said the bear. "I'm Barnaby. I'm the Star Keeper."

"I'm Lily," she whispered. "But... what are you doing in my pool?"

Barnaby laughed, a sound like honey dripping on warm toast. "Your pool became special tonight. On the night of the thousand-year star, any pool touched by moonlight fills with starlight. And bears who love stars come to visit."

He splashed glowing droplets that turned into tiny butterflies before vanishing.

"Would you like to swim with me?" Barnaby asked. "The starlight feels like warm sunshine and strawberry jam all mixed together."

Lily dipped her toe in the starlight. It was warm and tingly, like being hugged by a cloud. She climbed in and floated beside the bear. They paddled through galaxies, dodged shooting stars, and made friends with a family of star-nose moles.

"Being a friend means sharing adventures," Barnaby said, teaching Lily to catch falling stars in their hands. "Real friends make ordinary things magical."

They played until dawn painted the sky pink. The starlight faded back into regular water. Barnaby grew transparent.

"Will I ever see you again?" Lily called.

Barnaby's last words echoed as he disappeared: "Real friends are never truly gone. Look up at the stars. That's where I'll be."

Lily woke up in her bed, clutching a glowing star-shaped stone. She still swims in her pool, but sometimes at night, she sees ripples that look like a bear is playing just beneath the surface.

And she waves, knowing her friend is always watching from the stars.
