The Starlight Pool
Lily lived in a house with a big backyard. In the middle of the yard sat an old swimming pool, but nobody had used it for years. Leaves floated on the murky water, and the fence around it was falling apart.
One summer night, Lily couldn't sleep. She crept downstairs and noticed something strange — a soft blue glow coming from the backyard. She slipped outside in her bare feet and followed the light to the old pool.
What she saw made her gasp. The murky water was now crystal clear and filled with tiny stars that swirled like glitter in a snow globe. And there, sitting on the pool's edge, was the scruffy brown dog from next door. But this wasn't ordinary Buster — he was wearing a tiny golden crown!
"Hello, Lily," Buster said in a voice like gentle thunder. "I've been waiting for you."
"You can talk?" Lily whispered.
"Only under the midnight moon," Buster explained. "This is the Starlight Pool. It appears only for children with brave hearts. Are you ready for an adventure?"
Lily nodded, her heart pounding with excitement.
"Take my paw," said Buster, "and we'll visit the Kingdom of Dreams."
They stepped onto the water together. It felt firm, like walking on a cloud. Suddenly, they began to rise, floating upward through sparkles of light. Below, Lily could see her whole neighborhood, then her town, then the world itself — a beautiful blue marble spinning in space.
"Where are we going?" Lily asked.
"To meet an old friend," Buster said mysteriously.
They arrived at a castle made entirely of wishes. Inside sat a gentle creature who looked like a moonbeam given form — The Keeper of Dreams.
"Welcome, Lily," the Keeper said. "Every night, children's dreams flow into the Starlight Pool. You, my dear, have stopped believing in magic. That's why the pool appeared — to remind you that wonder never truly disappears."
Lily felt tears prick her eyes. School had been hard lately. Kids had laughed at her for believing in unicorns and fairies.
"Never let anyone dim your sparkle," Buster said gently, nudging her hand with his wet nose. "The world needs more magic, not less."
The Keeper gave Lily a small pouch. "These are star crystals from the pool. Whenever you feel your imagination fading, hold one, and remember — magic lives in the hearts of those who believe."
Lily opened her eyes. She was back in her backyard, wrapped in her blanket. The pool looked ordinary again. But in her pocket, she found a small crystal that glowed faintly in the moonlight.
Buster was gone, but from next door came a familiar bark.
Lily smiled, clutching the crystal. She finally understood — magic wasn't gone. She just needed to keep looking for it. And she had a new friend, one who would always remind her that the most wonderful adventures begin with a single spark of belief.
