The Starlight Goldfish
Lily peered into her fishbowl. Her goldfish, Finley, swam in lazy circles.
"I wish you could talk," Lily whispered. She sprinkled fish food into the bowl.
Finley ate the orange flakes—and suddenly shimmered! His scales turned rainbow-colored, and a tiny golden bubble floated from his mouth.
Lily gasped. Inside the bubble were words: *"Thank you for the starlight vitamin!"*
"Starlight vitamin?" Lily asked.
Finley swam to a silver cable draped across her windowsill. It gleamed like moonlight. Lily followed with her eyes—the cable stretched from her window all the way to the sky, disappearing among the stars.
"This cable connects my bowl to the Starlight Kingdom," Finley's bubble read. "Every night, starlight travels down it. When you feed me, I'm actually eating starlight vitamins! They give me magic."
Lily's eyes widened. "Can I come?"
Finley's scales flashed bright. "Hold the cable! Think about your favorite dream!"
Lily gripped the silver cable. She closed her eyes and imagined flying among the stars. WHOOSH! She shrank tiny and tumbled upward, sliding along the cable like a zip line.
Stars sparkled around her. The cable ended at a crystal castle floating in space. Inside the castle, starlight was being sorted into glowing jars—each jar a different color.
"This is where dreams are made," Finley explained, swimming beside her in the air. "Starlight vitamins help fish grant wishes. But our kingdom is fading. Children stopped believing in magic."
Lily's heart sank. "I believe!"
"Then you can help," Finley said. "Take this gold cable home. Hang it above your bed. It will remind you—and anyone who sees it—that magic is real. Every time someone believes, the Starlight Kingdom glows brighter."
Lily clutched the golden cable. It hummed with warmth.
She slid back down to her room, Finley beside her. The cable now hung above her bed, shimmering softly.
That night, Lily dreamed she swam among the stars with Finley. And from that day on, she noticed something magical: whenever she believed in impossible things, her goldfish would flash rainbow-bright, and the golden cable above her bed would glow.
Lily learned that the greatest magic of all isn't starlight vitamins or flying cables—it's believing in wonder.
And every night, if you look closely at your own goldfish, you might just see them shimmer, too.
