The Starlight Cat's Midnight Race
Lily couldn't sleep. She pressed her nose against the cool glass of her bedroom window, watching the moon paint silver paths across her backyard. That's when she saw the cat—a silky creature with fur that shimmered like the night sky itself.
The cat wasn't walking. It was running, but not like any cat Lily had ever seen. With each bound, it leaped higher and higher, until finally—it jumped right onto the moonbeam stretching across the lawn!
Lily gasped. The cat paused and looked back at her, eyes twinkling like captured stars. It seemed to beckon her forward.
Without thinking, Lily opened her window and stepped onto the moonbeam. It was solid beneath her feet, warm and glowing. The cat waited, its tail swishing with comet-like trails.
"I'm Luna," the cat said—or maybe Lily just understood it without words. "And I need a friend for tonight's adventure."
Lily's heart leaped. A friend! She'd just moved to this town and hadn't made any friends at school yet.
Luna began running again, and Lily chased after her. They raced across the moonbeam, higher and higher, until the whole world spread below them like a patchwork quilt. Lily's feet barely touched the ground—she was flying, really, running beside the magical cat through a forest made of constellations.
Trees made of starlight rustled as they passed. Nebula-flowers bloomed and faded in seconds. The running felt like dancing, like breathing, like the most natural thing in the world.
"We're running late," Luna called. "The stars are waking up!"
They reached the edge of the galaxy just as the first star blinked open. Then another. Then hundreds, all greeting them with tiny chiming sounds. Luna nudged Lily forward.
"Your turn," she purred. "Make a wish on any star, and it'll become your friend forever."
Lily closed her eyes and whispered, "I wish for a friend who'll never leave me."
When she opened her eyes, a tiny blue star floated down and nestled in her palm. It pulsed warmly, like a heartbeat.
"I'll always be your friend," the star seemed to say.
Luna purred approvingly. "Now, running home before dawn!"
They raced back across the moonbeam, faster than before. The star in Lily's hand glowed brighter with every step.
Back in her room, Lily found Luna curled at the foot of her bed. The blue star now floated above her nightstand, casting gentle light.
"See?" Luna whispered. "The best friends find you when you're busy running toward adventures."
Lily fell asleep smiling, with a star for a friend, a magical cat for company, and dreams already forming of tomorrow night's running race.
