The Starlight Cable

Lily loved swimming in the lake behind her house, but tonight the water shimmered with an unusual golden glow. She dipped her toes in, and ripples of sparkles danced across the surface.

Suddenly, a sleek black cat appeared on the dock. 'You're late,' said Mittens, though Lily had never spoken to her cat before tonight. 'The starlight cable only comes at twilight.'

Before Lily could ask what that meant, a glowing silver cable descended from the sky, ending in a crystal basket. Mittens leaped inside and looked back expectantly. 'Well? Are you coming or not?'

Lily climbed in, and they soared upward through clouds that tasted like cotton candy. Below, she saw her house, her school, and the entire valley stretched out like a quilt.

The cable stopped at a floating island where a great golden pyramid hovered in the air. But as they stepped closer, Lily gasped—the pyramid wasn't made of stone. It was made of thousands of crystallized wishes, each one glowing with someone's dream.

'Guarding it is Barnaby,' Mittens whispered.

From behind the pyramid emerged the most enormous bear Lily had ever seen. But Barnaby wasn't scary. He wore a waistcoat and tiny spectacles, and he was weeping silently.

'What's wrong?' Lily asked, forgetting to be afraid.

Barnaby sniffled. 'I've been guardian of the Wish Pyramid for three hundred years, but I've never made a wish of my own. I don't know how.'

Lily thought about all the times she'd been afraid to try new things. 'Maybe your wish could be about being brave enough to wish.'

Mittens nodded wisely. 'The bravest wishes are the ones we're afraid to say out loud.'

Barnaby closed his enormous eyes and whispered, 'I wish to have a friend who will swim with me in the Lake of Stars.'

The pyramid blazed with brilliant light, and suddenly a beautiful silver lake appeared beside them, filled with glowing fish that swam in patterns of constellations.

'I'd love to swim with you,' Lily said, taking Barnaby's furry hand. Mittens dove in gracefully, and soon they were all swimming through the starlight, laughter bubbling up like magic.

When the starlight cable returned them to the dock, Lily knew this wasn't a dream. Her cat gave her a knowing wink, and in her pocket, she found a small crystal pyramid that glowed whenever she needed courage.

Sometimes, the best adventures come from being brave enough to make a wish—and being kind enough to help someone else make theirs.
