The Starlight Bull's Secret
Leo loved spying on the old bull from behind the hay bales. Every night at midnight, something magical happened in the meadow behind their farm. The bull—whose name was Barnaby—would lift his massive head toward the sky and his horns would catch the starlight, glowing like silver candles.
One Tuesday, Leo crept closer than ever before. His heart pounded like a drum. What he saw made him gasp.
Barnaby wasn't just a regular bull. He was a star guardian! As the old bull moved through the tall grass, tiny sparks fell from his horns like diamond dust. Wherever the sparks touched, sleeping flowers opened their petals, and fireflies danced back to life like little zombies awakening from a long winter nap.
"I see you there, little spy," Barnaby said gently. Leo jumped. The bull's voice rumbled like warm thunder.
"You... you can talk?"
"Only to those who truly believe in magic." Barnaby lowered his giant head. "For fifty years, I've guarded this meadow. Every night, I collect starlight to wake the sleeping beauty in this garden. See?"
Leo looked around. The whole meadow was blooming. Flowers that had looked brown and dead yesterday were now purple and gold and crimson. Fireflies zipped everywhere, their lights flickering like tiny heartbeats.
"But why does it look like a zombie garden by day?" Leo asked.
Barnaby chuckled. "Magic needs rest too. The flowers save their energy for midnight, when real magic happens. That's why most people never see them glow—they're all asleep!"
Leo's eyes widened. "Can I help?"
"If you promise to keep our secret and believe in the impossible."
Leo nodded so hard his curls bounced.
Every night that summer, Leo and Barnaby tended the starlight meadow together. Leo learned that the coolest magic happens when no one is watching. And sometimes, things that look dead or ordinary are just waiting for the right moment to shine.
His parents thought Leo had developed a strange new hobby—staying up late to "spy on the bull." But Leo knew the truth. He wasn't just watching a farm animal. He was helping magic happen, one spark at a time.
