The Starlight Bull's Pond Game
Lily loved visiting her grandmother's farm, especially on warm summer evenings when the fireflies danced like tiny floating stars. But her favorite time was when she could sneak down to the old pond behind the barn.
One night, as Lily sat on the grassy bank skipping stones across the **water**, she heard a soft crunching sound behind her. She turned to see the farm's giant **bull**, Barnaby, trotting toward her. Most children would have been scared, but Lily knew Barnaby was the gentlest creature on the farm.
"Hello, old friend," she whispered, patting his massive nose.
To her surprise, a small orange **cat** named Muffin jumped from Barnaby's back and landed gracefully on a nearby rock. Muffin was the farm's mysterious cat who appeared and disappeared like magic.
"Tonight's special," Muffin meowed clearly, as if cats could talk. "Barnaby wants to show you something."
Lily's eyes widened. "You can talk?"
"Only on starlight nights," Muffin purred mysteriously. "Follow us."
Barnaby led them to a hidden meadow Lily had never seen before. In the center stood an old wooden table, and on it lay something surprising—a **baseball** that glowed with soft silver light.
"Watch this," Muffin said.
Barnaby carefully nudged the glowing baseball with his nose. Instead of rolling away, the ball floated upward, leaving trails of sparkles like a comet. As it soared higher, the night sky transformed. The stars began arranging themselves into the shape of a giant baseball diamond!
"Every summer solstice," Muffin explained, "the Starlight Bull and I play a game that helps the stars remember their positions for the coming year. But we're getting old. We need someone new to learn the magic."
Barnaby nudged Lily gently with his wet nose. "Would you like to play?" Muffin asked.
Lily's heart soared. "Yes! But I don't know how."
"The true magic isn't in winning," Muffin said. "It's in playing with friends and keeping the wonder alive. That's what makes the stars shine."
That night, under the magical starlight, Lily learned that friendship and imagination are the most powerful magic of all. And every summer since, on the longest night of the year, you can see the stars twinkle just a little brighter—because somewhere, a girl, a gentle bull, and a magical cat are still playing their wonderful game.
