The Starlight Bear
Emma's dog Barnaby never barked at storms. But tonight, as lightning flashed across the midnight sky, he whined and scratched at the back door.
"What is it, Barnaby?" Emma whispered, following him into the garden.
CRACK! Purple lightning split the sky, and something glowing tumbled from the stars. It landed softly in the orange tree, its branches bending under the weight.
Emma gasped. Nestled among the leaves was a bear—small as a teddy, but shimmering like liquid starlight. His fur pulsed with gentle orange light, the same color as the sunset Emma watched from her window each evening.
"I fell," the bear said in a voice like distant thunder. "The lightning shook me loose from my constellation."
Barnaby approached cautiously, tail wagging. The bear reached out a glowing paw, and the brave dog licked it gently.
"I'm Orio," the bear said. "I need to get home before sunrise, or I'll fade away forever."
Emma's heart raced. "We'll help you!"
She gathered orange peels from the tree—the ones that still held their sunset scent. Barnaby found his favorite ball, which glowed whenever Emma threw it. Together, they built a ladder of moonlight and wishes, climbing higher and higher.
Orio glowed brighter with each step. But as they reached the clouds, he began to flicker.
"I'm not strong enough," he whispered.
Emma thought quickly. She tied the orange peels around Orio's neck like a necklace. Barnaby nudged his glowing ball forward. The sunset scent and the ball's magic swirled together, creating a brilliant orange light.
"Go!" Emma cried.
Orio shot upward like a comet, trailing orange sparks behind him. He landed in his constellation, shining brighter than any star.
Emma and Barnaby watched from below, waving as Orio twinkled back. Sometimes now, when lightning storms come, Emma sees orange flashes in the sky—Orio saying hello. And every evening at sunset, her faithful dog sits by the window, watching for their friend among the first stars.
"Friends help each other find their way home," Emma tells her mother. "Even when it seems impossible."
And somewhere among the stars, a little orange bear twinkles in agreement.
