The Starfish Who Learned to Dance

Coral was the smallest starfish in the whole ocean, but she had the most beautiful bright orange tentacles that waved like dancing hair in the water. All the other starfish had plain colors, but Coral glowed like a piece of sunshine fallen into the sea.

Every day, Coral would watch the fish swimming gracefully above her head. They twisted and turned, leaped and dove, dancing through the water as if it were a magical invisible sky. Coral longed to join them, but starfish don't swim—they only creep slowly along the ocean floor.

"I wish I could glide and twirl like you," Coral sighed to a passing school of silver fish.

"You could try!" said the littlest fish, whose name was Finn. "Nobody knows what they can do until they try!"

Coral looked at her orange tentacles. Maybe Finn was right. That night, when the moonlight shimmered through the water like silver ribbons, Coral decided to attempt swimming. She pushed off the sandy bottom and waved her orange tentacles—her beautiful hair-like arms—in big circles.

To her surprise, she began to rise! She spun and twirled, her orange arms trailing behind her like ribbons in the wind. Up and up she swam, higher than any starfish had ever gone before.

"Look at me!" Coral called, dancing through the water. "I'm swimming!"

Finn and all the fish gathered around, amazed. "You're not just swimming," Finn said with wonder. "You're dancing!"

From that day on, Coral taught all the other starfish how to swim and dance too. The ocean became filled with twirling, spinning starfish, their orange arms flowing like underwater fireworks. And Coral, the littlest starfish who dared to dream, became known as the ocean's greatest dance teacher.

She learned that sometimes the most magical things happen when you're brave enough to try something new—and that your differences, like her beautiful orange hair, can become your greatest gifts.
