The Star-Swimming Bull
Maya loved swimming more than anything. Every summer evening, she'd slip into her grandfather's pond under the silver moon. But tonight was different—the water glowed like liquid stars!
"Come swim with us," whispered a deep, rumbly voice.
Maya peeked above the lily pads. There, standing on the bank, was the most magnificent bull she'd ever seen. His horns were made of twisted moonlight, and his coat shimmered like the night sky.
"I'm Barnaby," the bull said kindly. "I'm the constellation Taurus, but I've lost my herd. Without them, my stars keep fading."
Maya's heart squeezed. She knew exactly how loneliness felt.
"I can help!" Maya said. "But how?"
Barnaby's eyes twinkled. "You're not just swimming in water, Maya. Tonight, you're swimming in starlight. Come with me."
He stepped into the pond—and instead of sinking, he began swimming through the air! Maya gasped as the water lifted her too, and suddenly she was gliding beside Barnaby, soaring higher and higher until they floated among the constellations.
"My friends are scattered across the sky," Barnaby explained sadly. "The Great Bear, the Little Bear, the Dragon... they're all so far away."
Maya had an idea. "We'll find them together!"
Side by side, they swam through the galaxy, collecting fallen stars and trailing them behind them like breadcrumbs. Each constellation they found joined their parade, until a hundred glowing friends danced through the night sky.
Barnaby's stars burned brighter than ever. "Thank you, Maya," he said, nuzzling her hand. "You swam all the way to the stars to help a friend."
When Maya woke in her bed the next morning, she wondered if it had all been a dream. But pinned to her dress was a single shimmering star hair from a bull's coat.
Now whenever Maya goes swimming, she looks up at Taurus blazing in the night sky, and the great bull winks back. Some nights, she swears she can still feel starlight swirling around her, reminding her that the best friends are the ones who swim beside you through the darkest skies—and that kindness shines brightest of all.
