The Star-Scalped Girl
Luna had the most unusual hair in the whole town. Whenever she felt happy, it shimmered like rainbow sprinkles. When she was sad, it turned soft and blue as twilight. And when she was curious—which was almost always—her hair sparkled with tiny lights, just like the night sky.
One evening, as Luna brushed her glittery hair before bed, she noticed something strange. Her cat, Mittenpaws, was sitting on her dresser, staring intensely at their tiny goldfish bowl. The goldfish, named Bubbles, wasn't swimming in circles like usual. She was floating perfectly still, watching Mittenpaws right back.
Luna gasped. 'Mittenpaws! You're not going to eat Bubbles, are you?'
But then the impossible happened. The goldfish popped her head above the water and said, 'Oh, hello there! We were just having a lovely conversation about the moon.'
Luna nearly dropped her hairbrush. 'Bubbles... you can TALK?'
'Only to special friends,' bubbled the goldfish, her scales shimmering with an iridescent glow. 'And Mittenpaws has been visiting me every night, telling me wonderful stories about your adventures.'
Mittenpaws purred proudly and hopped onto Luna's shoulder. 'We wanted to wait until you were ready,' the cat explained softly. 'Bubbles isn't really a fish. She's a fallen star who lost her sparkle when she splashed into your pond last summer.'
Luna's hair suddenly blazed with brilliant silver light. 'A fallen star? But how can I help?'
'Starlight hair!' cried Bubbles. 'That's exactly what I need to fly home again!'
Together, the three friends crept to the backyard under the stars. Luna closed her eyes and thought of her happiest memories—building forts, sharing cookies, Mittenpaws purring on her pillow. Her hair began to glow brighter and brighter, wrapping around Bubbles in a shimmering cocoon of silver light.
With a joyful *WHOOSH*, Bubbles transformed into a brilliant star, zooming upward and leaving a trail of sparkles across the sky. She twinkled three times—*blink, blink, blink*—before finding her place among the constellations.
Every night now, Luna checks the sky. The new star in the constellation always seems to twinkle extra bright when she waves. And sometimes, in the reflection of her bedroom window, she imagines she can still see a tiny goldfish swimming among the stars, reminding her that the best friends are the ones you least expect.
