The Star River's Gift

Lila loved running through the meadow, her bare feet dancing on the soft grass. Every evening at sunset, she would race the wind, laughing as it tried to catch her golden braids. But today was different. Today, the wind didn't just blow—it whispered.

"Follow me," it seemed to say. "Follow where the stars fall."

Curious, Lila ran faster than ever before, past the old oak tree, beyond the babbling brook, until she reached a place she'd never seen: a pool of water that shimmered like liquid silver, even though the moon hadn't risen yet.

"Welcome, star-child," said a soft voice.

Lila looked around. No one was there.

"Down here."

Peeking over the edge, she saw the most amazing creature—a tiny fish with scales that sparkled like rainbows and fins that glowed with gentle light.

"I'm Finn," said the fish. "And this is the Star River. It's where wishes come to swim before they're sent up to become stars."

"Wishes can swim?" Lila asked, her eyes wide.

"Only wishes that are brave enough to try the water," Finn explained. "Most wishes stay on land, safe but stuck. But the special ones—the ones that really matter—they dive right in!"

Lila thought about her wish. She wanted to be brave, to stop being afraid of the dark, to believe magic was real.

"I want to make a wish," she said bravely.

Finn smiled. "Then you must do what no other human has done. You must go swimming in the Star River with your wish."

The water looked deep and mysterious. Lila's heart raced. But then she remembered how running had taught her that the scariest part was always the first step.

She took a deep breath and slipped into the water. It wasn't cold—it felt like a warm hug. To her surprise, she could breathe! Tiny glowing fish swam around her like floating lanterns. Her wish took shape beside her—a beautiful silver fish that swam joyfully toward the center of the pool, then burst upward, becoming the brightest star in the night sky.

"Your wish is now a star," Finn said. "And every time you're afraid, just look up and remember—you're the girl who went swimming with stars."

Lila climbed out, glowing with happiness. Running home beneath a sky full of stars, she knew the truth: some wishes don't just come true—they grow brighter when you're brave enough to dive deep into the water of wonder. And that night, Lila didn't need a nightlight anymore. She had her very own star, shimmering above, reminding her that magic is real for those brave enough to believe.
