The Star Dog's Home Run
Toby sat on the front porch steps, his **baseball** glove resting beside him like a sleeping cat. The neighborhood kids were playing at the park, but Toby always got picked last. He sighed, wishing he had someone to practice with, someone who believed in him.
That's when he saw the golden tail wagging behind the oak tree. A fluffy brown **dog** with one ear that stood up straight and one that flopped down trotted into his yard, carrying something shiny in his mouth.
"Woof!" the dog said, dropping a glowing orange bottle at Toby's feet. The label sparkled with starlight: STAR **VITAMIN**S – For Extra Believe Power.
Toby blinked. "You can understand me?"
The dog nodded, his tail thumping happily. "I'm Barnaby! I live on the cloud that floats above your house. I saw you needed a friend, and I know a thing or two about believing." He nudged the bottle toward Toby. "These aren't ordinary vitamins. They're made from fallen stars and wishes. One small pinch, and you'll believe in yourself so much that amazing things will happen."
Toby took one tiny piece. It tasted like sunshine and blueberry pie – the best flavor ever. Suddenly, he felt warm all over, like he was wrapped in a magical hug.
"Now," Barnaby said, "let's play catch!"
They practiced until sunset, with Barnaby catching every ball – even with his mouth! When Toby finally joined the neighborhood game the next day, something wonderful happened. Every time he stepped up to bat, he remembered Barnaby's voice: "You've got star power in you!"
Toby hit the ball so far it nearly cleared the fence. The other kids cheered. But the real magic happened later when he realized the vitamins had disappeared. Barnaby licked his cheek and whispered, "The magic was never in the vitamins, Toby. It was in you all along. Sometimes we just need a friend to help us see it."
And from that day on, Toby was never picked last again – not because he was the best player, but because he played with his whole heart and always made sure everyone felt included. Barnaby still visits sometimes, always when Toby needs reminding that believing in yourself is the greatest magic of all.
