The Star-Bull's Secret Friend

Lily discovered the magic pond on her eighth birthday, hidden behind a wall of blackberry bushes at the edge of her grandmother's farm. The water there didn't ripple like ordinary pond water. It shimmered, as if tiny stars were swimming just beneath the surface.

One summer evening, as fireflies blinked in the tall grass, Lily crouched by the pond and saw something extraordinary. A baby bull made entirely of stardust and moonlight was curled up at the bottom, sleeping peacefully. His coat glowed like warm honey, and his horns were twisted like crescent moons.

From that night on, Lily became the bull's secret friend. She would visit him every evening, bringing apples from the orchard and stories about the world above. The bull, whose name was Orion, told her about his home in the constellation Taurus, where he was supposed to guard the stars but had fallen by accident during a meteor shower.

"I'm too little to climb back up," Orion said sadly, splashing water with his glowing nose. "And I'm afraid of the dark without my star-friends."

Lily made a decision. She became his special spy, searching the farm for anything that might help Orion return home. She watched the sky for patterns, listened to the wind for messages from the stars, and kept her telescope pointed at Taurus every night.

What she discovered surprised her: the constellations were calling! On clear nights, she could hear them whispering, "Orion, come home!" through the tinkling of wind chimes and the rustling of leaves.

Together, Lily and Orion devised a plan. During the Perseid meteor shower, when the sky would blaze with falling stars, Orion would use the water like a mirror to catch a ride on a passing meteor back to his constellation. Lily's job was to splash the water at just the right moment to create a perfect reflection.

The night was clear and streaked with meteors. Orion stepped into the center of the pond. "Thank you, Lily," he said. "You taught me that even the smallest friends can be the bravest guardians."

As a bright meteor streaked overhead, Lily splashed the water. Orion's reflection caught the meteor's light, and in a flash of golden sparks, he soared upward, higher and higher, until he became the brightest star in Taurus.

Now, whenever Lily looks at the night sky, Orion twinkles back, and sometimes, if the water is just right, she can still see him splashing in the pond's reflection, watching over her the way she once watched over him.
