The Star Bull's Secret
Lily stood at the edge of the meadow, her knees shaking. Tomorrow was the annual village race, and everyone expected her to win. But Lily was afraid. She wasn't fast like the other children, and her legs always felt heavy when she tried running.
As the sun began to set, Lily wandered into the forest behind her house. She needed to think. That's when she heard a soft snort. Parting the tall ferns, she gasped.
Before her stood the most beautiful creature she had ever seen—a bull made entirely of starlight. His horns were crescent moons, his coat sparkled like the night sky, and when he breathed, tiny galaxies floated from his nose.
"I'm Orion," the bull said gently. "And I know why you're here."
Lily blinked. "You can talk?"
"All things can speak if you listen with your heart," Orion replied. "I've watched you, Lily. You think you need speed to win, but that's not true at all."
Orion lowered his magnificent head. "Climb on my back. There's something I want to show you."
Carefully, Lily climbed onto the star bull's back. With a gentle leap, they shot into the sky! Below, the village became a tiny patch of light. The wind rushed past them like a whisper.
They flew over the racecourse. But instead of seeing people running, Lily saw something else—trails of color behind each runner. Some left streaks of gold, others blue, others green.
"What is that?" Lily asked.
"That's their joy," Orion explained. "The boy who leaves gold tracks loves running. The girl with purple streaks loves to dance. But you—when you run with fear, your tracks are gray and heavy. When you run with love, your tracks become rainbows."
Lily understood. "I don't have to be fast. I just have to enjoy it!"
Orion landed softly back in the meadow. "And one more thing, little one. A true friend runs beside you, not against you."
The star bull nudged her hand, and suddenly Lily felt warm all over. "I'll be with you tomorrow. Not in body, but in here." He tapped her chest with his nose.
The next day, Lily stood at the starting line, her heart full instead of fearful. When the race began, she didn't think about winning. She thought about the magical feeling of flying with Orion, the wonder of the starlight bull, the joy of movement.
Lily ran smiling, breathless but happy, and when she crossed the finish line—she wasn't first, and she wasn't last. But she was radiant.
Her best friend Maya ran over, breathless and beaming. "Lily! You were glowing! Literally glowing!"
Lily smiled, pressing a hand to her heart where she could still feel Orion's warmth. "That's the secret, Maya. We don't run to beat others. We run to set our hearts free."
And that's how Lily learned that sometimes, the most magical friends aren't the ones you can see, but the ones who teach you to believe in yourself.
