The Star-Bull's Midnight Swim
Eight-year-old Maya couldn't sleep. Through her window, she watched her dog Cooper bouncing at the back door, tail wagging like a metronome gone wild.
"Cooper, it's the middle of the night!" she whispered, slipping outside. The summer air smelled like honeysuckle and secrets. Cooper led her past the garden, past the old oak tree, to the creek where Maya had always been too afraid to swim.
But tonight, the creek glowed. And there, standing knee-deep in the shimmering current, stood a bull - not a scary farm bull, but a creature made of moonlight and stardust, with horns curved like crescent moons.
The Star-Bull lowered his massive head. "Child," he rumbled, his voice like underwater singing. "Cooper tells me you seek courage."
Maya's eyes widened. Cooper had been telling a constellation bull her secrets?
"I'm afraid of swimming," she admitted.
"Ah," said the Star-Bull. "The water remembers when we were all swimming in the sky, before falling to Earth as stars. Each stroke is remembering."
He stepped aside, and Maya saw galaxies reflected in the water.
"Will you swim with me?" asked the bull. "Tonight, the creek flows through the Milky Way."
Cooper barked excitedly. To her surprise, Maya waded in. The water cradled her like a warm blanket. She kicked, she paddled, and suddenly she was gliding through starlight, the great bull swimming beside her with gentle grace.
They swam past planets made of pebbles, through nebulae like cotton candy. The bull's horns caught starlight and scattered it like diamond dust.
"You're swimming!" Cooper barked from the bank.
Maya laughed, tumbling through galaxies. "I am!"
As dawn approached, the Star-Bull nudged her gently. "Courage isn't absence of fear," he whispered. "It's swimming despite it."
He dissolved into mist rising upward, becoming the constellation Taurus in the brightening sky.
Maya waded to shore, Cooper licking her face. Walking home, she felt different. She couldn't wait for swimming lessons. Because somewhere, a star-bull was swimming through galaxies, and she had swum right beside him.
