The Star Bull's Midnight Swim
Lila had the curliest, wildest hair in all of Coconut Valley. It bounced like springs when she walked and puffed up like a dandelion when the wind blew through it. Her grandmother always said, "Your hair is special, Lila. It catches magic like a net catches butterflies."
One hot summer night, Lila couldn't sleep. The full moon shone through her window, making silver patterns on her palm as she pressed it against the glass. She noticed something strange—her palm was glowing with tiny starlight dots, just like the night sky.
Curious, Lila tiptoed outside to the old palm tree at the edge of her yard. The tree had stood there for hundreds of years, its trunk twisted like a rope and its leaves whispering secrets to anyone who listened.
"Hello, little one," the palm tree rumbled, its voice like dry leaves dancing.
Lila's eyes went wide. "You can talk!"
"Only to those with magic in their hair," the tree replied mysteriously. "Tonight is special. The Star Bull is crossing the sky, and he needs a friend for his midnight swim."
Suddenly, a magnificent creature descended from the stars—a great bull made entirely of shimmering constellations, his long tail trailing comets behind him. His fur was a tapestry of galaxies, and his horns were crescent moons that glowed with gentle silver light.
"Will you swim with me?" the Star Bull asked, and his voice sounded like wind chimes and distant thunder mixed together.
Lila climbed onto the Star Bull's back, her curly hair streaming behind her like a banner of curls. Up they soared, past the clouds, past the moon, right into the velvet darkness of space.
"Hold your breath," said the Star Bull. "We're going swimming!"
They dove into the River of Stars that flowed across the night sky. All around them, tiny starfish twinkled, and nebulas painted the water in ribbons of pink, blue, and gold. Lila laughed as she floated among constellations that looked like leaping fish, swimming turtles, and dancing dolphins.
"Why me?" Lila asked, splashing stardust.
The Star Bull smiled, his constellation eyes sparkling. "Because you have the kindest heart, the wildest imagination, and the most magical hair I've seen in a thousand years. The stars chose you, Lila. Remember—magic lives in the things that make you different."
They swam until dawn painted the sky pink. As the Star Bull carried her home, he whispered, "Whenever you need me, just look at your palm. The starlight will always remember you."
Lila woke up in her bed, her curly hair even wilder than before. But now, when she looked at her palm, she saw the tiniest star shining there, a secret promise of midnight adventures and the friendship of a starry bull who swam among the galaxies.
