The Spy With Blue Hair

Maya pressed her back against the hallway locker, heart hammering like she'd just chugged three espresso shots. She was officially a stalker now. A spy. That's what her best friend Jen had called it when Maya confessed she'd been "strategically positioned" outside the cafeteria every day for two weeks just to catch glimpses of Ethan—sophomore, soccer captain, and owner of a smile that could probably end world hunger.

"You're not even being subtle," Jen had said. "You're literally spy-ing."

Maya adjusted her hoodie, trying to look casual. Like someone who definitely wasn't obsessing over a guy who didn't know she existed. Then she caught her reflection in the locker window and almost died right there.

Her hair.

The DIY midnight blue hair dye disaster from Saturday stared back at her—patchy, splotchy, and currently frizzy because she'd forgotten her umbrella during third period. Jen had sworn it looked "edgy." Maya's mom had called it "interesting." Her brother just asked if she'd lost a fight with a highlighter.

"Whatever," she muttered, attempting to smooth a particularly rebellious section. "It's fine. I'm fine. This is fine."

Then Ethan walked out of the cafeteria.

He was surrounded by his friends—popular, perfect, effortlessly cool. Maya considered bolting. Instead, she stood frozen, feeling like the world's most awkward secret agent.

And then, in what could only be described as a cosmic joke, her phone started blasting her ringtone at max volume. The ringtone she'd thought was SO funny when she set it: that viral TikTok sound of someone yelling "BULL! BULL! BULL!" like they were at a rodeo.

Ethan turned. His eyes locked with hers.

Maya's blue hair frizzed in the fluorescent light. Her phone kept screaming about bulls. She wanted to evaporate.

But then—Ethan smiled. Not a polite smile. A real one.

"Is that the rodeo guy?" he called out. "I love that sound."

Maya's brain short-circuited. "Yeah!" she squeaked. "My, um, brother showed it to me."

"Your hair looks sick, by the way," Ethan said, walking over. "Did you dye it yourself?"

Maya nodded, stunned.

"That's actually kind of badass. I tried to dye my hair green once and it came out looking like I'd been swimming in a toxic lake."

The spy mission hadn't gone according to plan. Her hair was still a disaster. But somehow, standing in that hallway with her patchy blue hair and her bull-screaming phone, Maya felt like she might actually be okay with being exactly who she was—even when who she was was kind of a mess.
