The Spy Who Swam

Maya's iPhone buzzed under her towel, but she ignored it. The cool pool water lapped against her skin as she floated on her back, staring up at the perfect blue sky. This was her sanctuary—the one place where the social hierarchy of sophomore year couldn't touch her.

"Maya! Earth to Maya!" Her best friend Chen's voice broke through her peaceful zone. She splashed water toward him. "I'm meditating on my failure at life."

"Drama queen." Chen plopped onto the pool deck beside her. "Someone posted that TikTok of you falling into the planter at lunch. It's already got 500 likes."

Maya groaned and submerged herself completely. When she emerged, Chen was scrolling through his phone. "You're practically viral. hashtag #PlanterGirl is trending."

"Perfect. That's exactly what my brand needed." Maya squeezed chlorinated water from her hair. "At least my mom packed me that spinach and feta wrap for lunch tomorrow. Small wins."

"Yeah, about lunch..." Chen lowered his voice. "I saw Jason and his friends whispering about you in the cafeteria. They were pointing at your table and laughing."

Maya's stomach did that familiar flip—the same one from middle school when rumors spread that she still slept with a stuffed animal. "What were they saying?"

"I don't know, but Jason kept saying 'spy mission' and making these little camera gestures with his hands." Chen frowned. "Should we... investigate?"

"Investigate?" Maya laughed. "This isn't a spy movie, Chen. They're probably just making fun of my outfit or something."

But Chen was already heading toward the pool gate. "Where are you going?"

"Your sister works at the smoothie place where they all hang after school. I'll text her to ask what's up."

Maya followed, grabbing her towel. "Chen, stop. Seriously." But her phone buzzed again—a notification from an unknown number. She swiped it open, expecting another stupid meme.

Instead, a photo popped up. It was HER, sleeping on her porch swing, captioned: "Target acquired. Operation: Make Maya Smile begins tomorrow at 11:47 AM."

Behind the message was another: "Bro, she's reading it RIGHT NOW. abort or proceed?"

Chen leaned over her shoulder. "Okay... that's creepy, right? We should report this?"

Maya's heart hammered against her ribs, but then she saw something in the corner of the photo—the top of Jason's stupid blonde head, reflected in her porch window. He must have been on her lawn.

"Wait," Maya said slowly. "Tomorrow at 11:47 AM... that's lunch period." She scrolled to another message—a screenshot of her Spotify playlist with the note: "She likes indie bands now? noted."

"They're not spying on me," Maya said, realization dawning. "They're researching me."

"For what? To embarrass you?"

"No." Maya's hands trembled, but not from fear. "I've been at their table literally every lunch since seventh grade, and I never ordered anything except lettuce and water because I thought they'd judge me for eating 'real food.' They noticed. They're trying to figure out what I actually like."

"Oh my god," Chen breathed. "That's actually... kind of sweet?"

"Or incredibly weird," Maya said. "But... I did post that story about loving spinach smoothies last week. And they definitely noticed." She stared at the messages, her face heating up. "So what do we do? Act like we didn't see this?"

"No way." Chen grinned. "Tomorrow, you walk up to Jason's table, you order the biggest, messiest burger they have, and you tell him: 'Thanks for the recon, but the spy gig needs work. You're loud.'"

Maya smiled. Really smiled, not the polite half-smile she'd been perfecting for years. "And then what?"

"And then," Chen said, "we see if this spy squad knows how to make a proper spinach smoothie."
