The Spy Who Saved Sparkles

Lily was the best kind of spy—a backyard spy. Every morning, she'd sneak behind the big oak tree and watch the world through her binoculars made from paper towel rolls.

One Tuesday, she spied something extraordinary. Mr. Finch's pond glowed with shimmering light. There, swimming in circles, was the most beautiful goldfish Lily had ever seen. Its scales sparkled like tiny stars.

But what amazed her most was what happened next. A butterfly landed on a lily pad and dropped something small and orange into the water. The goldfish swam up, took the glowing object into its mouth, and—POP!

The fish grew wings. Not just any wings—rainbow wings that sparkled in the sunlight.

Lily gasped and stepped forward. A twig snapped beneath her sneaker.

The goldfish froze. 'Someone is spying on me!' it said in a voice like gentle bells.

Lily's eyes went wide. 'You can talk!'

The goldfish landed softly on the grass. 'I'm Sparkles. And that orange thing was my special vitamin. Without it, I'm just a regular fish. But with it, I can fly and talk for one whole hour.'

Lily and Sparkles became fast friends. Every day, Lily would spy on the butterfly to see when it would bring the magic vitamin. Then she and Sparkles would have adventures—flying to the top of trees, rescuing baby birds, and once even helping a lost kitten find its way home.

One afternoon, Sparkles looked worried. 'The butterfly hasn't come in three days. My magic vitamin is running out.'

Lily grabbed her binoculars. 'Don't worry, Sparkles. I'm the best spy in the backyard. I'll find out what happened.'

She followed the butterfly's path all the way to Mrs. Chen's garden. There, trapped in a spider's web, was the beautiful butterfly.

Lily carefully freed it. The butterfly danced around her gratefully, then flew straight back to the pond with a fresh glowing vitamin.

That night, as Sparkles flew loops around the moon, Lily smiled. Being a spy was fun. But having a best friend was the greatest adventure of all.
